Recognize!

My sister wrote the below Instagram post for Latino Outdoors recognizing the hard work of my boy, Shane. Gotta keep giving back and believing in the power of community. Community building is so critical to inspiring our youth and I love intermingling it with promoting the outdoors!

I was also inspired by the advocacy work Latino Outdoors is doing. So excited to see this organization promoting Latino work with education and the outdoors. Check them out @LatinoOutdoors on social media.

Have fun outdoors!

Today let's recognize Shane Reyes @sugashane24 who is a middle school #teacher, received his Masters of Arts in Sports Management, and is the After School Education and Safety (ASES) Coordinator: Cahuilla Desert Academy Middle School. The statewide ASES program has allowed Shane to bring his passion for sports and being outside to his students for whom he has a daily impact. "My program and our district is primarily Latino and serves the migrant community with many of our parents working in the fields. Being Latino and having grown up here and gone to college shows my students that it is possible to leave the Coachella Valley, get an education and come back and serve our communities." Through #CVUSD ASES, underprivileged students are given a safe and encouraging environment to explore the outdoors, build athletic skill and create lasting relationships with their peers and mentors. "Our success is immeasurable and my staff and I don't do what we do for the accolades. When students come back year after year and volunteer on their weekends or are on the verge of graduating high school and they want to come back and work for me, that means we are doing our jobs". Looking to the future, Shane has plans to shape his ASES district programs, making activities more accessible and inclusive to students who would normally shy away from the outdoors and sports by incorporating photography, art and, yes, even cornhole that will help them to cultivate an interest in the outdoors while building self-esteem and develop socially. Shout-out to all the teachers out there who go above and beyond, tirelessly working to enrich our childrens' lives. #TrailblazerTuesday #Teachers #Advocacy #Community #TheYouthIsOurFuture #LatinoOutdoors
