Difficult People
Can we talk about the elephant in the room? Yes, diverse workplaces are wonderful for innovation but diverse work-styles can make the work…difficult. I love collaborating with different teams but don’t we all know who will inhibit the task/project/conversation? And not saying those persons don’t have great ideas, but perhaps their thought-process is too meta for me? I am detail-oriented and a systems-thinker and big overarching views make me ponder how to operationalize the big picture (insert mind explode emoji).
Yes, I’d love to tackle overall disparities/inequities in LA right now, but right now we’re updating our such and such process. Yes, I’d love to answer why we are doing this to your satisfaction, but can we make this system more efficient (have to add here that I like taking unnecessary items away and this is referring to required systems). Can we just get this done together and put our best efforts into it?
It is so important to create buy-in to tasks/projects/overall mission so you can lessen this pushback. But there are those, who seem to derail the process no matter how much effort you put into building relationships and trust. At the end of the day the work has to be done by someone and it seems to fall on the same non challenging people. I don’t think this is fair but it is easier.
Accountability is key here. And in public/non-profit organizations, there is a lack of time or understanding of how to document or motivation to hold staff accountable.
In this line of thought blog, I just realized that this has turned into an HR issue. *smacks forehead
